Vision Restored With Custom, Medically Necessary Contact Lenses

Standard contact lenses aren’t right for every eye. Patients with corneal irregularities from conditions like keratoconus, eye trauma, or prior surgery often need a more customized solution. At Primary Eye Care Associates, we specialize in custom-designed, medically necessary contact lenses that restore vision for patients with corneal irregularities caused by surgery, disease, or trauma.

If you’ve struggled with distorted, double, or blurred vision, even after refractive surgery or corneal treatment, we may be able to help.

When Are Contact Lenses Considered “Medically Necessary”?

Contact lenses are considered “medically necessary” when they’re required to correct vision problems that glasses or standard soft lenses cannot resolve. These typically involve irregular or damaged corneas and may result from:

  • Keratoconus or Pellucid Marginal Degeneration
  • Corneal scarring due to infection or trauma
  • Post-refractive surgery complications (RK, LASIK, PRK)
  • Corneal transplant surgery
  • Severe irregular astigmatism

Common Symptoms of Corneal Irregularities

If you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms, a specialty and medical contact lens evaluation may be appropriate: corneas and may result from:

  • Blurred or distorted vision
  • Double or triple vision
  • Ghosting (a shadowed double image)
  • Halos or starbursts around lights
  • Poor contrast sensitivity
  • Glare or difficulty seeing at night

Designs for Complex Eyes

We use a CAD/CAM contact lens design system, to create fully customized lenses shaped to your cornea. Each lens is designed using corneal topography—a map of your eye’s surface—allowing us to tailor lenses with micron-level precision.

Custom lens options includes:

  • Scleral lenses, which vault over the cornea and are ideal for irregular corneas and severe dry eye
  • Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) lenses for maximum clarity in complex cases
  • Hybrid lenses combine the optics of an RGP with the comfort of a soft lens
  • Toric designs for patients with high or irregular astigmatism
  • Multifocal and single-vision lenses customized to your daily needs
  • Orthokeratology lenses (corneal reshaping lenses)
Scleral Lenses for Dry Eye Relief

In addition to correcting complex refractive issues, scleral lenses are often prescribed for patients with ocular surface disease. These lenses vault over the entire cornea and trap a reservoir of fluid between the lens and the eye, providing long-lasting hydration and protection throughout the day.

Conditions commonly treated include:

  • Severe dry eye or keratoconjunctivitis sicca
  • Exposure keratopathy
  • Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD)
  • Ocular inflammation and corneal epithelial defects

Why Custom Contacts Work

  • Better visual clarity, even in difficult cases
  • Improved comfort and lens stability
  • Hydration and protection for compromised corneas
  • Fewer complications and reduced dependence on surgery

If you’ve been told nothing more could be done, custom lenses may offer the solution you’ve been waiting for.
